I’ve worked as a copywriter in agencies in and around London for almost fifteen years. I’ve been freelance for some of this time and employed for the rest. I cut my teeth as a fresh-faced English graduate, traipsing the streets of Soho knocking on doors with a portfolio I’d cobbled together as a Marketing Executive for Honda. I got my first break at TBWA/GGT and haven’t looked back.
Can anyone be a Copywriter? Friends think it’s just a matter of typing and having half a brain. But when you’ve sat alongside some brilliant Creative Directors and been fortunate to gain insights into what makes brands sell, globally and locally, you begin to hone your copywriting craft.
It’s not always the big agencies that make you though. I’ve moved around and spent time working at independent agencies and smaller niche ones. I’ve sat alongside some excellent Art Directors and some equally talented designers. I’ve spent time absorbing and working for clients within every sector imaginable – including automotive, finance, telecoms, utilities, entertainment, food and drink, sport, travel, property and charity.
